Meghalaya BJP team meets Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, submits memo

SHILLONG: Meghalaya BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai and BJP president Ernest Mawrie met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at his New Delhi residence and sought the utilization of the Garrison Ground by civilians.

Shullai also requested the Defence Minister that the Shillong Municipal Building by-law be extended and made applicable to the Shillong Cantonment area.

Shullai submitted a memorandum in this regard and also requested the Defence Minister for early sanctioning of the funds required for PHE water tank and upgrading the Cantonment School upto class 12 besides improving facilities of the Goenka Hospital.

The BJP MLA also requested the Defence Minister to allow the Shillong Cantonment Board to construct a shopping mall and parking hub. The BJP MLA including members of Shillong Cantonment Area Development Committee are most likely to seek State Government intervention for utilization of the Garrison Ground for civilian purposes.

The State Government can move the Central authorities to sign a MoU with defence authorities for utilization of the ground by both civilian and defence personnel as the defence authority has no reason to hold the ground as it is centrally located and underutilised.
