Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma reviews Passing-out Parade

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday reviewed the passing out padded of Deputy SPs, Sub Inspectors and assiatant sub-inspectors who completed the 46th Batch Basic Course training at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) in Umiam, Meghalaya on Saturday.

In his address, Conrad while appreciating the advances made by NEPA in the past 41 years said that North Eastern region is of special significance to the nation not only because of its immense biodiversity, culture, ethnicity and heritage but also because of its strategic geographical significance connecting to the mainland through a narrow band of land, the chicken neck, that brings in its attendant issues of difficulties of reach and transport.

“Improved infrastructure and development of the North Eastern region is very important and we have always remained committed towards ensuring improved connectivity, good transport network and social and economic development of Meghalaya,” he said. He added that development can sustain and flourish in an environment of peace and reminded the officers of their primary responsibility to collect intelligence on any issue that poses a threat to internal security, resolve conflicts and maintain law and order, thereby instilling a feeling of security among the people. “Stable and secure States and region will allow the governments to focus its energies on development issues,” he said.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the government is fully committed to working towards peace, progress and prosperity and added that in the endeavour of security of the North East, all the North Eastern states must adopt a unified, coordinated and cohesive strategy to tackle common threats faced by the region. “Police in the north east have a special role to play compared to the police in the rest of the country because each state shares a border with another country and many of the inimical and criminal elements take advantage of cross border and international linkages to escape the clutches of law,” he said. He called for police of North East to act in coordination and the need for close liaison between the State Police and the Border Guarding CAPFs like Assam Rifles, BSF, ITBP and SSB deployed on the north eastern borders.

He also said that NEPA can play an important role in and can act as nodal training agency to design and conduct specialized training modules for the police of the North Eastern states as well as the CAPFs deployed in the region to ensure uniform strategy and streamlining of efforts adding to effective control of crime and help check crimes like narcotics and human trafficking that afflicts the North East.

The Chief Minister also distributed trophies and medals to the trainees for their individual performance during the training period.

Earlier, Director, NEPA, Kala Ramachandran administered the oath to the 196 trainees. The 50 weeks 46th Basic Course comprised of probationers and cadets from Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

The trainees have been imparted with essential skills, knowledge and required attitude to deliver their best once they join active service. Apart from the regular indoor training comprising Police Science, Legal Studies and Social Science, Outdoor training comprising Drill, Weapons training, Physical Efficiency, Field Craft, Tactics, Horse Riding and swimming the trainees were provided with special inputs on Cyber-Crime, Disaster Management, Gender Sensitization, Riot Drill and practical training on bandobust etc.
