Guwahati: Setting an example, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today planted trees at the State Secretariat premises and Ward's Lake in capital city Shillong to mark World Environment Day, 2020.

"Meghalaya is home to diverse flora and fauna. Our ancestors have lived and worked for the preservation of nature and have worked for the preservation of nature and have engineered sustainable solutions as seen through our sacred forests and living root bridges. We are all inter-connected, biodiversity is key to the survival of all life on earth. Ecosystems rely on each other and therefore we must preserve and restore our biodiversity", Sangma said. Sangma also underlined the need to protect the varied animal species that are on the brink of extinction.

It may be recalled here that last year on this very date, the Meghalaya administration launched a 'one citizen one tree' campaign urging each citizen to plant a tree each. The campaign was kickstarted from Langkyrdem village, a tiny hamlet located around 50 kilometres away from the state capital Shillong. A social media campaign centred around Meghalaya's One Citizen One Tree was also launched wherein citizens could register to participate in the mass plantation targeting 1.5 million trees by clicking on a registration form provided on social media platforms.

The community-based programme, launched at a time when the state is rapidly losing forest cover due to the ill-effects of industrialization-induced-deforestation, saw massive support from citizens, and especially among the youth.

This year, the celebrations in Meghalaya and elsewhere are considerably muted, considering the destructive march of the Covid-19 pandemic that has already killed a prominent doctor in the state. Yesterday, 2 more persons who had returned to Meghalaya amid the lockdown restrictions -- one from Goa and one from Maharashtra -- tested positive for the coronavirus, taking the tally of cases to 33
