SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday informed that the 5 persons who tested positive for COVID-19 are from East Khasi Hills district.

It may be mentioned that the five persons which includes two women were part of the 101 returnees from Delhi and Haryana who have arrived in the State on Monday evening.

"They are now in the Corona Care Center at the Civil Hospital here," Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said during his daily briefing.

State Health Minister, AL Hek informed that the number of samples sent for testing as of Wednesday is 6,553 out of which 6,138 cases came out negative. The report of 395 samples are awaited and 20 positive cases have been reported, one person died, 12 recovered and there are seven active cases.

On one Ajit Dey, a native of Karimganj district, who tested positive for COVID-19, Director of Health Service (DHS), Dr Aman Warr said, "We suspect he caught the virus during his transit from Shillong."

Dey on May 22 had travelled from Shillong to Karimganj in a hired vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister also informed that till Wednesday afternoon a total of 10, 100 stranded students and individuals of the State has returned Meghalaya from various parts of the country.

Tynsong also informed that special trains from Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan carrying 317 and 150 respectively have left for Guwahati Railway Station.

"Today two more trains from Delhi and Kerala are scheduled to start," the Deputy Chief Minister informed.

He said that each trains will be carrying around 500 stranded citizens of Meghalaya.

On the issue of bringing back the stranded citizens from Maharashtra, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that he has spoken to the Chief Minister of Goa and Aditya Thackeray a Cabinet Minister in the Maharashtra government to provide special trains to the stranded citizens of Meghalaya.

"We have got an assurance and we will resolve the Mumbai, Pune and other parts of Maharashtra situation at an early date," Sangma said.

Moreover, a review meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and attended by Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council chief, Titosstarwell Chyne and Syiem of Hima Mylliem, it was decided that Ïewduh will remain close till further orders.

Tynsong however said that the government has further decided to lift restrictions and allowed sale of clothes of new borns, textiles, umbrellas, raincoats, kitchens appliances, household items, household electronic goods, travel agencies and car showrooms.
