Meghalaya Government Extends Ban On Mobile Internet Services In Seven District

Due to the series of sporadic incidents taking place in Meghalaya, government has extended the ban on internet services in seven districts

MEGHALAYA : Keeping into consideration the ongoing sporadic situation in Meghalaya, the government of the state has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services for another 48 hours in seven districts of the state.

An unforeseen episode occurred in Meghalaya's capital Shillong on Thursday evening. Few miscreants set a traffic booth into fire and attacked on three police vehicles, including a public bus. The incident took place when a candlelight protest was carried out by some groups to show objection against the violence that occured on 22nd of November in the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Six person lost their lives in the tragic yet violent occurrence. Among them, five people were identified as innocent civilians of Mukroh village, and one Assam forest guard.

The appointed officials in that area were compelled to use tear gas shells to disperse the protesters that were throwing stones and petrol bombs at the security personnels on Thursday. A public city bus and three vehicles of the police force were destroyed in the ambush caused by the miscreants. They purposely set the the traffic booth on fire as a form of protest in East Khasi Hills, Shillong. 

Following the stray incidents of arson, Meghalaya government extended the ban on mobile internet to obstruct any sort of misuse of social platforms, which can cause serious violations of law and order of the state. West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills are the seven districts where internet services are suspended from 10:30 AM onwards. 

There has been a series of scattered incidents going on in Meghalaya after the firing episode, an Assam-registered SUV vehicle was set ablaze by locals of the state, stones thrown at Assam registered vehicle, traffic booth set into fire. Several tourists are stuck in Meghalaya including both domestic and foreign, and have been struggling to get out of the state.
