SHILLONG: Police in Meghalaya seized 14 crore rupees' worth of heroin hidden in soap boxes on a bus travelling to Shillong from Manipur.

Acting on specific information, the bus was stopped and searched and the drugs recovered. Three notorious smugglers travelling on the bus were also apprehended. The bus was carrying students on study trip to Shillong from Manipur. The police later had to make alternative arrangement for the students to proceed on their tour. 

The incident occurred in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district on Friday, when three people were detained and heroin valued at 14 crore rupees was seized from their possession, according to the police.

Police apprehended the group early in the day as they were travelling on a bus from Manipur to Shillong after receiving a tip, according to the district superintendent of police Giri Prasad.

158 soap boxes with 2 kg of heroin were found to be stashed within the back cabin during the inspection of a bus with registration number MN-01 A 0484 on a highway close to Mandarin-Saiden village in Ri- Bhoi district. 

Rashijuddin, Saddam Hussain, and Iqbal Hussain, three citizens of Manipur's Bishnupur area, were the trio of smugglers who were apprehended.

Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister, praised DGP L. R. Bishnoi and the police force for the successful seizure.

"@RibhoiPolice diligently followed a tip off & nabbed 3 notorious traffickers from Manipur in the wee hours today & seized - 158 boxed high grade Heroin worth Rs 14 Crore originated from Manipur & consigned to Shillong," Tweet read of the Chief Minister.

"Hope this will further ignite the performance of cops on the frontline," he added.

As per a recent statement given by Director General of Police L R Bishnoi, Drugs worth over Rs 18 crore have been seized and 134 traffickers arrested in Meghalaya till September this year.

The seized drugs include 3.62 kg heroin, 4,500 kg ganja, 150 gm opium, 145 bottles of cough syrup, and 11,902 amphetamines tablets.

Thirty-one vehicles, 90 mobile phones, and cash of Rs 24.22 lakh were also seized during the period, the DGP said.

According to sources, the Meghalaya Police chief said that most of the drug trafficking is taking place in eight out of the twelve districts of the state.

The districts where drug trafficking is taking place are East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia, West Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Garo Hills, and South Garo Hills.
