Guwahati: Meghalaya registered 182 COVID-19 positive cases on Saturday, which is the highest single-day spike in the Northeast Indian state so far, a senior health official said.

Informing this, Director of Health Services (DHS) Dr. Aman War said that out of the 182 cases detected today, 121 are from East Khasi Hills, which includes 5 armed forces/paramilitary forces and 116 others. Ri-Bhoi recorded 31 cases of the virus. As of Friday, as many as 14 people had succumbed due to the viral infection.

The Meghalaya government is of the opinion that 'community transmission' of the virus has already begun in the state. Confirming the same to The Sentinel Digital, Ak Hek, the Meghalaya health minister said that the current spike in cases is "indicative of community transmission" in Meghalaya.

Tynsong yesterday informed that the state has continued to witness a surge in the COVID-19 cases and not less than 60 people are testing positive for the pathogen on a regular basis. The Deputy Chief Minister said that "this is because many have forgotten to follow the protocols by the government strictly."

Meanwhile, India's COVID-19 caseload hurtled past the 40-lakh mark on Friday night, just 13 days after it crossed 30 lakh, while the total number of recoveries too surged to 31,06,921, according to data from states and union territories. Union health ministry data updated on Friday 8 am showed a single-day spike of 83,341 infections.
