NESO vows to oppose CAA, reposes faith in Supreme Court

SHILLONG: A day after the Citizenship (Amendment) Act came into force, the North East Students Organisation (NESO) has vowed to oppose it at all costs, and hoped that the Supreme Court of India would pass a verdict reflecting the sentiments of the indigenous people of the north-eastern States.

The NESO had filed a petition against the Act before the Supreme Court on December 17, 2019. NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa told The Sentinel on Saturday, “We have full faith in the judiciary and we expect an outcome that will give justice to the indigenous people of the north-eastern region.” Reiterating that "under no certain circumstances we will accept the CAA", Jyrwa stated, "They (Union Government) have gone ahead with the law without listening to our sentiments. Our position is clear: You cannot legitimize any foreigner in the name of religion.”

The top NESO leader also took a dig at Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal terming him as a "betrayer of the common cause". He said, “Sonowal was the leader at the forefront to fight against illegal migrants right from our student days; but now he has betrayed that very cause.”

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was the man who had legally fought and got the IMDT -- Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act -- repealed by apex Court.
