No ‘Urban Apathy’, Says Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Fredrick Roy Kharkongor

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Fredrick Roy Kharkongor, has stated that the seeing the voting percentage in the city constituencies, “the notion of urban apathy regularly perceived is not true.”

Kharkongor pointed out that East Shillong constituency recorded 62.54 per cent voter turnout, West Shillong – 65.03 per cent, North Shillong – 60.07 percent, South Shillong – 63.91 per cent and Nongthymmai recorded 63.27 percent.

“The voting percentage in constituencies under Shillong city were above 60 per cent which are fairly robust figures,” the CEO said.

The CEO also informed that for the Shillong parliamentary seat, the assembly segment which recorded the highest voter turnout was Sutnga-Shangpung with 74.26 per cent while Mawlai assembly constituency recorded the lowest voter turnout with 59.32 per cent.

Meanwhile, for the Tura Lok Sabha seat Selsella recorded the highest voter turnout with 92.20 per cent while South Tura the lowest with 71.97 per cent.
