Oil tanker crews to shun Meghalaya for safety's sake

GUWAHATI: The Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union has informed the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation's (HPCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) that its members will not transport petroleum products to Meghalaya till such time as the government of the neighbouring state gives an assurance to ensure the safety and security of oil tanker crews travelling from Assam.

The Union has also demanded that the government of Meghalaya must express willingness to "take responsibility" if any untoward incident befalls the oil tanker crews travelling from Assam.

The Union said that it has taken this step in view of the "abnormal situation" obtaining in Meghalaya, especially in the Ri-Bhoi, Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts.
