Political Decision Must for HNLC Cadres: DGP RP Agarwal

A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP), in-charge, RP Agarwal on Monday said that the remaining cadres of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) “are looking for something from the government” before they decide to come over ground.

According to Agarwal, the police cannot decide on any safe passage for these HNLC cadres but if anything “it has to be a political decision.”

The DGP in-charge also said that cases against former HNLC general secretary, Chesterfield Thangkhiew were lodged before 2003 and the police will have to study the files before taking a call on the matter.

It may be mentioned that last week State Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong while interacting with media persons during the surrender ceremony of Thangkhiew when asked about the cases lodged against him asked to leave the matter to the wisdom of the Government “how to handle this issue”.

When asked whether he is going to face trial for the crimes he had committed, the Deputy Chief Minister again reiterated that the Government will take a decision to make sure that everything is fine.

Meanwhile, on Monday in another interaction with media persons, the Deputy Chief Minister when asked if the MDA Government would attempt to reach out to Bobby Marwein to come over the ground without involving Thangkhiew, Tynsong said, “Leave this to the wisdom of the government.” On the Opposition Congress East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh asking the MDA Government to enlighten the people of the State the circumstances that led to the surrender of the former HNLC general secretary, Tynsong said he had only seen the statement in the media.

The Deputy Chief Minister pointed out that in 2007, the chairman of the HNLC Julias Dorphang also had come over the ground and surrendered before the then Chief Minister DD Lapang.

Tynsong said, “For somebody who wants to come over the ground, there should be a special passage, otherwise how will they be able to come and join the mainstream. I was surprised the way she questioned his surrender.”
