Problem of influx still persists: Khasi Students’ Union

SHILLONG: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) president Lambokstarwell Marngar on Saturday said that the students’ body has been fighting against influx for decades but the problem still persists.

Margnar was speaking at the function to commemorate the 25th death anniversary of former chief of the KSU Bull Nongjop Lyngdoh.

Stating that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill proposed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government in the Centre would lead to the indigenous people becoming minorities in their own homeland, the KSU president said that the recent meeting between the Union Home Minister with the civil society groups of the was mere eyewash.

“The Centre had already made up its mind to implement the CAB in the region,” he said.

Margnar also said that the union would never accept the bill since it is against the interest of the indigenous people of the region.

He also stated that the proposed exemption made in the CAB for States having Inner Line Permit (ILP) and Sixth Scheduled areas was only to a way to fool the people of the region. “The Sixth Schedule has always been there but we don’t see it’s effectiveness,” the KSU president said.

Meanwhile, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah rejected the idea of multiculturalism. “In fact multiculturalism has instead turned to acculturation” Thabah said.

He also said that in proper Shillong the Khasis are already a minority with their population being only 46 per cent.

“If we don’t fight one day we will become a minority,” he said.
