SHILLONG, July 3: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) State Youth Wing (SYW) on Tuesday shut down various central offices in the capital city after they were found working on Behdienkhlam which is an ancient traditional festival of the Jantia’s.

It may be mentioned that the state government has also declared today as a state holiday in light of the festival.

The KHNAM SYW has also expressed its opposition as a number of central offices and institutions have remained opened despite being a state holiday.

“Our state has many traditional festivals to honor our ancestors like the Shad Nongkrem, Behdiengkhlem, Shad Weiking, beside other festivals, however it’s very disappointing to witness that there are some central offices and institutions which have remained open today,” Thomas Passah president KHNAM SYW said here.

He informed that KHNAM had to shut down a number of offices which was found to be working on a day in which even the state government has declared a state holiday every year.

“This action shows that there is a lack of respect toward the culture and tradition of our people,” he said.

He alleged that in a meeting with the Geologist of a central office which was found working Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL) it was found that in the list of holidays of UCIL they have not included Christmas day, Good Friday, Shad Nongkrem, Behdiengkhlem, Shad Weiking etc.
