Stage set for first phase Lok Sabha polls on April 11

SHILLONG: The Election Commission is ready to conduct the Parliamentary polls to the two seats in Meghalaya.

The State with two Parliamentary seats – Shillong and Tura will vote during the first phase of polling on April 11 along with 89 other constituencies all over the country.

With bad weather threatening to dampen the enthusiasm of the electorates, the Election Commission is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the voters are not inconvenienced on the polling day.

“We are prepared for the weather. We have issued instructions to the district electoral officers and the returning officers to be alert and to arrange adequate polythene covers for the EVMs,” State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Fredrick Roy Kharkongor said.

Kharkongor also informed that instructions for tented arrangements in polling stations should be made by the respective district electoral officers and returning officers.

The CEO also informed that polling parties have started moving to their respective destinations on Tuesday two days prior to the polling day.

“Polling parties for 1074 polling stations have left for their respective destinations today,” Kharkongor said.

According to him polling parties for another 2093 will leave on Wednesday, on the eve of polling.

There are 3167 polling stations all over the state.

The CEO also informed that the first Braille EPIC was handed over to renowned educationist Bertha Dkhar in a function held in the city on Tuesday.
