SHILLONG: Will the purported Times Square in Polo, here conceptualized in 2014 see the light of the day? The executed plan is only visible in the ongoing construction of a three-storeyed market place.

Notwithstanding the then Chief Minister’s tall talks of a Times Square-type of an environment, a senior official told ‘The Sentinel’ that it is more of a conceptualized beginning.”

While the project amounting to approximately Rs 21 crores is in progress, doubts are being raised on its early completion when the preliminary work appears to be in a shambles. When asked, the Principal Secretary of Urban Affairs, DP Wahlang told ‘The Sentinel’ that “since this is based on central funds, the execution of the work will be on the fund's flow. We will be inaugurating the Polo vendors complex in two to three months’ time. What is left now is a construction of an additional hall space on the top floor. That will probably be utilized for meetings. It will entail additional expenditure,” he informed.

On the Times Square in the area, Wahlang said that it is just a concept which comprises construction of a commercial complex, beautification of the whole of Polo junction and areas in and around the Polo market.

He said that the detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared for the commercial shopping complex next to the vendor’s complex.
