Areca nuts worth crores recovered in Mizoram

CHAMPHAI (Mizoram): In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, the Serchhip Battalion of Headquarter 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 153 bags Areca Nuts worth Rs 47,73,600 in the Area of Tlangsam in Champhai district on November 9.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of 8 Assam Rifles, 10 Assam Rifles and Customs Department, Champhai based on specific information.

The approximate cost of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 47,73,600. The Customs Department of Champhai seized the contraband items. Further legal proceedings are on, stated a press release.

Ongoing smuggling of areca nuts is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. Assam Rifles. Christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.
