Lalrinawma Appointed Pro-Tem Speaker of Mizoram Legislative Assembly

Guwahati: Governor of Mizoram Kummanam Rajasekharan on Friday appointed Lalrinawma as the Pro-tem Speaker for the inaugural session of the eighth state legislative Assembly commencing Tuesday.

Lalrinawma was elected from Tuikum seat in central Mizoram’s Serchhip district on Mizo National Front (MNF) ticket. The two-time legislator was sworn-in at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan on Saturday

Lalrinawma would succeed senior Congress leader and two time Speaker Hiphei, who had resigned from the Congress party last month and joined the BJP party

He would exercise the powers of the Speaker during the session until Assembly speaker is elected, an official notification said.

Lalrinawma would administer the oath of office to the 38 newly elected legislators (one person was elected in two seats) on Tuesday, Assembly secretariat sources said, adding that the speaker would also be elected on the first day of the session.

Rajasekharan would deliver his customary Gubernatorial address in the Assembly on Wednesday which would be the only business of that day.

The third and concluding day of the session would begin with obituary references by leader of the House Zoramthanga and the discussion on the motion of thanks on the governor’s address would be held after which the session would be adjourned sine die, the sources added.

Election to 40-member Mizoram Assembly was held on November 28 and counting of votes took place on December 11. The MNF won 26 seats in the 40-member Assembly, followed by the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) which managed to win 8 seats and the Congress bagged five seats.

The Governor formally invited the MNF chief on Wednesday to form the next government after receiving the signed notification of the Assembly poll result from Election Commission officials.

The Governor on Thursday had summoned the first session of the Assembly from next Tuesday.
