Mizo Hockey Player Lalremsiami comes home in a Palanquin

Mizoram celebrates the homecoming of its much-loved hockey player Lalremsiami who plays for the Indian national hockey team and is returning her home in Kolasib, 85 km north of state capital Aizawl. This is a moment of great joy and cheerfulness for the people of her hometown as the 18-year-old, who also happens to the be the youngest player in Indian women’s hockey team and has recently bagged silver medals at both the Asian Games 2018 and Youth Olympic Games.

The warm welcome Lalremsiami received on reaching her hometown’s Diakkawn square was worth noticing as the youths and locals of the made her sit in an open palanquin made of bamboo sticks and placed her at the highest place giving the honour in Mizo traditional practice. This is an experience very rare to the Mizo people and certainly, has been the best and most memorable moment for the hockey player.

Lalnunmawia Sailo, who was also present at the gathering, said, “Back in 2014, we gave a grand welcome to Mizo Idol (a singing competition in the state) winner Grace Lalchhanhimi, and now four years later, we have gathered here again today. She is the daughter of Kolasib.”

Lalremsiami’s father Lalthansanga Zote said, “This is beyond my expectations. Look at this, thousands of people unite only because of my daughter, I never knew my hometown is this united.”

The entire atmosphere in and around the town has been in a mood of celebrations with fans and admirers of the hockey player flocking around her. However, she could also be seen greeting and garnering love from her fans while also signing autographs.

An overjoyed Lalremsiami told the media, “All I could say is thank you to all of them. Me in an open palanquin, paraded the town of Kolasib — this is beyond a dream. If this is the kind of love I get from them, I’ll give my life to achieve more.”

However, this very instance shows the love for sports and success among the Mizo people who do not believe in discriminating a boy from a girl and treats all the very same and admirers equally. This shower of love and blessing for the hockey player has also inspired her to move forward in this field and perform her best in the future.
