Mizoram witnesses political giants as a part of poll campaigning

Guwahati: Mizoram is all set to undergo the first phase of polling amidst the visit of high profile political leaders for the last round of poll campaigning. The poll-bound north-eastern state is set to welcome political giants like Rahul Gandhi, Amit Shah and others who are to visit the state and involve in poll campaigning.

The party presidents of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress, Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi, respectively are scheduled to visit Mizoram on the same date for addressing election rallies on Tuesday. As Mizoram will be undergoing the first phase of polls on November 28, the election rally by the giants is going to play a vital role.

The Congress vice-President Rahul Gandhi will be arriving by a special flight and address rallies in Aizawl and south Mizoram’s Champhai town. The first election meeting in the state is at Champhai which is around 183 km from capital Aizawl. The incumbent Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla is contesting from this constituency as the Congress candidate. Next rally to be addressed by Rahul is at the third Mizoram Armed Police ground at Maulpui in Aizawl.

Before this as well, a rally by the Congress was scheduled on October 5 but it could not be materialized as the Assam Rifles denied permission to use their ground. The Assam Rifles stated that the ground was meant for sports activities only. This meeting was scheduled to be addressed by the Congress Vice President. But as alleged by the Congress party sources, this meeting was denied due to the intervention from the Union Home Ministry.

State Congress spokesperson, Lallianchhunga have also questioned the same that if the Congress cannot be allowed to hold a rally on the Assam Rifles ground then on what grounds it is was given for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally scheduled for November 22.

The BJP national president Amit Shah arrived at the Lengpui airport near Aizawl and visited Lawngtlai in southernmost Mizoram, Champhai. This constituency is quite is close to Myanmar border and Vairengte that shares inter-state boundary with Assam. Later, Shah arrived in Aizawl from Vairengte and released the BJP’s vision document for the State before leaving for New Delhi.

Rahul, addressing his first election rally at Champhai in Mizoram, did not miss accusing the BJP and RSS and blamed that the parties are trying to destroy the culture of the State. He said, “The RSS and the BJP understand that this is the only opportunity for them to enter Mizoram and destroy its culture. They know that they are unlikely to win the next [Lok Sabha] election.”
