National People's Party to contest Elections in Mizoram | 30 Oct, 2018

Guwahati: Conrad Sangma led, The National People's Party(NPP) is all set to contest the elections for the 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly scheduled to be held on November 28. The party announced on Monday.

Convenor of NPP, Lianzuala said on Monday, the party so far has received 25 applications seeking party tickets for the ensuing elections in the state. The party leadership is scrutinising all the applications, he said.

Lianzuala, also stated that the number of seats the party would contest as well as the names of the nominees would be announced soon

General secretary from Nagaland and the party's national observer for the Mizoram polls, Sasank Ghatraj, said though the NPP is a constituent of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), it has its own identity.

"NEDA is not a political party, but a forum or a platform for non-Congress political parties in the region," Ghatraj said, adding that the party is part of the coalition governments in Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya, and so is the BJP.

NPP national secretary and co-convener of the party in Mizoram, Lalrina, said there has been no pre-poll or post-poll alliance anywhere in the northeast and also in Mizoram. He said the main objective of the party was for significant representation of northeast tribals in Delhi. "We hope that we would be the voice and representative of the northeast in the national capital," Lalrina said.

NPP founded in 2013 by veteran parliamentarian PA Sangma following his ouster from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was launched in Mizoram by its president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on September 29.

Conrad Sangma, on Monday, said, that the party is likely to play a major role in the ensuing Assembly polls in Mizoram.

In 2015, in a rare move election commission has suspended NPP for its failure to provide party's expenditure during Lok Sabha Elections held in 2014. NPP became the first party to get suspended by Election Commission

In March 2018, The NPP came second behind Indian National Congress by winning 19 seats in the 2018 Meghalaya legislative assembly election, following which Conrad Sangma staked claim to form government with a letter of support from the 34 MLA, that included 19 from NPP, 6 from United Democratic Party, 4 from People's Democratic Front, two each from Hill State People's Democratic Party and Bharatiya Janata Party, and an independent.

In 2017 The NPP contested 9 candidates Manipur Legislative Assembly election and won 4 seats.
