On the blessed occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, rural Nagaland was declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) on October 2.
The state Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Jacob Zhimomi declared this during a function on the Swachhata Diwas.
Nagaland Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Jacob Zhimomi also said that the ODF is applicable to all the 1,122 villages of the state but it does not cover urban areas.
He asserted that the Public Health Engineering Department would cooperate with the Urban Development Department with the intention of achieving ODF in the urban areas.
He said, "The onus lies with the Urban Development Department to achieve the goal,"
The minister is hopeful that the state along with the entire nation would become ODF by October 2 next year, which will mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
He further said, "As we declare the state ODF, the job of every citizen should be to care for the infrastructure created and sustain the development."
The minister also distributed awards to 112 villages for best sanitation practices.
Last Year six districts in Nagaland were declared Open Defecation Free and the ODF districts are Mokokchung, Dimapur, Longleng, Kiphire, Phek, and Zunheboto.
