KOHIMA : In a tragic incident on Saturday,19th November, a car plunged into a 200-feet deep gorge in Nagaland's Kohima district. One couple died in the accident and four other people inside the car got injured severely. The episode occured near Touphema village, when the man driving the car lost control of his vehicle due to some sudden health condition and it fell into the gorge, stated the police. 

According to the police, the condition of the injured including their three sons and the sister of the man's wife is critical with major injuries. The deceased couple has been identified as Lothrong Yimkhiung and Chongki Ajung who died on spot. Their three sons has been identified as Kamba, Hankam and Lashi along with the sister-in-law, identified as Narola are under medical treatment at Naga Hospital, Kohima. 

The Yimkhuing Union Kohima (YUK) offered condolences to the deceased and prayed for the injured ones, fighting the battle of life. According to the reports, Kohima has witnessed 61 road accidents in the year 2022. Most of these accident cases were due to drunk driving according to the Kohima police. 

The Additional Superintendent of police (traffic and protocol) K. Soriso stated that a total of 61 road accidents has occurred in a duration of eight months ( January to August ) 2022. The SP talked about this during an awareness programme on road safety held at High School colony Panchayat hall. The officer mentioned that drunk driving is the major cause of road accidents in the district. 

He also states that the accidents mostly takes place in the festive season of November, December and January. K. Soriso encouraged everyone to take quick action and respond if they come across any such incident. A 'Good Samaritan Award' has also been instituted to recognise citizen for their prompt action.
