Nagaland awarded best state for excellent performance in BBBP scheme

Guwahati: The state of Nagaland has been awarded for best performance in 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (BBBP) scheme among the top five states/Union Territories (UTs) under state competition categories in recognition of the overall support, guidance, monitoring and achieving the targets of the scheme.

The BBBP scheme was launched on January 22, 2015 by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi which aims at generating awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls. The child gender ratio in India was 927 girls per 1000 boys in 2001 which dropped to 918 girls per 1000 boys in 2011 according to the census data. The BBBP scheme also aims to address the issue of the declining child sex ratio image and is a national initiative jointly run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Initially, the scheme was launched to focus multi-sector action in 100 districts across the country where there was a low child sex ratio.

Nagaland has been awarded among the top five states for the BBBP scheme on the occasion of National Girl Child Day celebrated on January 24 and according to the Mission Director for State Resource Centre for Women, Nagaland chapter Daisy Mejhur, this is the first time that the states and UTs are awarded for good performances under the scheme of BBBP.

Union Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has given away the award to social welfare society Sarah R Ritse on behalf of the state government.

Speaking on the occasion, Ritse said that she was hopeful that the achievement would be a moral boost not just for the department but also for the state and it will also emphasize to work harder for the upliftment of women and children. The department also acknowledged the support rendered to team State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) by Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and the community as a whole.

On the other hand, the Wokha district administration has also been awarded amongst the 25 districts for its good performance under the BBBP scheme in the category of 'Effective Community Engagement'.

Dr. Manazir, Deputy Commissioner of Wokha has received the award on behalf of the district. Ms. Erenbeni P. Lotha, one of the local champions for BBBP from the district of Wokha was invited to share her experience as a local champion along with three other local champions from across the country.
