KOHIMA : The 3rd edition of Orange festival on Nagaland is going to mark and end for this year, today. The much awaited two day celebration started from 24th of January, Tuesday. 

The event took place in Rusoma which is 8km far from Kohima district in Nagaland. The orange festival basically aims at accelerating the orange production and farming in the state. Local orange growers during this festival, engage in maximum trading of the production with outsiders. 

It gives a boost to the farming community as well as offering them financial benefits. The Orange festival has been celebrated under the supervision of Rusoma Village Council in collaboration with Kohima Smart City Development Limited, Rural development unit, Horticulture department, agriculture department and land resource department.

The festival promoted several stalls including handloom and handicrafts curated by the locals of the region. Apart from that, visitors also enjoyed varied organic fruits and vegetables, fast food. People also set up stalls to sell tiny orange saplings during this phase.

The inauguration has been done on the 24th of January, Tuesday in presence of K Neibou Sekhose, Additional Director of Rural Development.

The event flagged off from 10:00am onwards. Apart from K Neibou, few other delegates including Kehouchiikhrie Mezhier, chairman of Rusoma village council, Orange festival convenor, Khrielie Chase and District horticulture officer S Senka.

The fest also recognised the best farmer who grew the most sweetest and largest oranges. As per sources, oranges were sold at a price of Rs 110 per kg. Spokesperson of the Orange fest on Wednesday stated that, Rusoma has a real fertile soil which eventually becomes a perk for the farming community.

Notably, a mature tree in the region bears over 4000 oranges at a time. Approximately 40 lakh revenue is generated on an yearly basis through orange cultivation, he added.

More than 50 families in Rusoma are engaged in the cultivation of orange. The orange farming spreads upto 70 hectares in the village. It is major source of income which facilitates in strengthening the economy of the place. However, the spokesperson mentioned that, due to unfavourable climatic conditions, production of oranges has been affected.
