AGP regional committees quit over CAA, criticize central leaders

LAKHIMPUR: Expressing resentment and anger against the Central Committee leaders of AGP regarding their tacit support to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, all the 15 regional committees of the party under the Lakhimpur legislative assembly constituency simultaneously stepped down on Saturday.

These committees have extended full support to the ongoing agitation against the CAA. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday Punaram Mili who was the secretary of the AGP Joyhing Regional Committee said that the meeting of all 15 regional committees had opposed the CAA as it posed threat to Jati Mati and Bheti of the Assamese people.

He said a general council meeting of AGP had opposed the CAB, 2016 since it violated the basic principle of the Assam Accord. "But the AGP's central committee president and working president have supported the same CAB passed recently in the Parliament. Their acts have gone against the interest of the people of Assam as well the party," he said.

Strongly opposing the activities of the central committee leaders Mili demanded the AGP president Atul Bora, working president Keshab Mahanta and Rajya Sabha member Birendra Prasad Baishya to immediately quit their controversial activities or face protests.
