Deprived Tripura Farmers Demand Proper Distribution of Seeds

A CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA: While farmers across Tripura are expressing grave concern over not getting quality seeds due to the faulty distribution system, the officials are worried that it will deprive the State from achieving the targeted agricultural production. It is learnt that taking advantage of faults in the distribution system, a section of people not having any cultivable land has taken away seeds to sell the seeds in the open market.

A large number of farmers used to remain deprived from getting quality seeds during the previous government due to partisan selection of beneficiaries. The present government introduced a new system for selecting the beneficiaries through the panchayats. But here too, the same malaise affected thereby depriving many genuine farmers of getting their due allotment of seeds. Many farmers are demanding a fresh initiative by the State department to collect seeds and then to distribute the seeds among the genuine farmers only.

Instead of directly taking the responsibility for the distribution of seeds, this time the Horticulture department had organized a mela from where the farmers collected their seeds from the traders directly. The problem has arisen as in many places the farmers were unaware about the mela date. Many others did not find seeds of their choice in the day-long mela. The farmers are demanding another round of ‘Seed Mela’ so that they can collect the seeds of their choice.
