Girl’s Molestation Compels 61 Families to Flee in West Tripura District

A clash between two communities over the molestation of a girl in Tripura have reached such a stage that around 300 people of 61 families have fled from the scene in order to escape further violations due to the molestation.

It all happened when a tribal girl and her boyfriend went to the Ranirbazar area on Thursday for seeing Durga idols and four local boys tried to molest her. The youths even snatched her mobile phone as well. As the girl had come from a nearby locality, she went back to bring along a large group of people to take revenge on the molesters.

As reported by sub-divisional police officer B.B. Das, “The two (girl, boy) went back to their locality and then returned with a large group of people who tried to attack the houses of those who reportedly molested the girl.”

This violent group of people jumped on the people of the molesters’ community and led to a severe attack on the other group including adding fire to one of the houses. The violence took such a turn that around 61 families that make some 300 people in total had to flee from the scene for the threat to their life.

The SDPO added, “The situation, however, could not be controlled immediately. The raiders attempted to burn houses and succeed to torch one house today. Following this, around 300 members of 61 families fled. About 100 of them are now camping near the Ranirbazar police station.”

The four youths are, however, arrested by police on molestation charges.
