Iconic Actress: Kirron Kher

Kirron Anupam Kher is a popular film and television actress, a TV talk show host and a member of BJP from India. The actress was born on 14 June 1955, in a Jat Sikh family. The actress was born and bought up in Chandigarh. She has hosted 3 television shows, starting with the “Purushkshetra” on Zee TV. The show got a lot of attention for bringing out the discussion of alternative sexuality for the first time, while highlighting women's issues. Her comeback film ‘Sardari Begum’, won her the Special Jury Award at the 1997 National Film Awards.

Despite playing only supporting roles, her successful movies include “Hum Tum”, and “Mangal Pandey: The Rising”. Her work in ‘Rang De Basanti’ was a hit and her performance got her nominated for the second time in the Filmfare, for the Best SupportingActress Award. Her role in “Fanaa” and “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” also received appreciation.

Some of her comical roles in 2008, included ‘Singh is Kinng’, “Saas bahu aur Sensex”. In 2009, she appeared as a judge on the television show “India’s Got Talent”, the Indian franchise of the Got Talent series. In “Dostana” and “Om SHanti Om”, she was seen in comical roles.

She has also acted in various epic films in serious roles like in “Devdas”, “Rang De Basanti” and “Veer Zara.”

Kirron Anupam Kher has won many awards some of which are: National Film Award for Best Actress: Bariwali (2000); IIFA Best Supporting Actress Award: Devdas (2003); Locarno International Film Festival: Best Actress: Khamosh Pani (2003), Colors Golden Petal Award for Most Dildaar Personality (2012).

Kirron Kher has been involved with non-profit movements such as Laadli (a campaign against female infanticide) and Roko Cancer (a campaign for awareness of cancer). She joined the Bhartiya Janata Party in 2009. She campaigned for the party in across the country during the elections, including the state of Chandigarh for the 2011 municipal corporation elections. She has been a vocal admirer of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, since long before his candidature was announced. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), declared her as the Lok Sabha candidate from Chandigarh for 2014 General Elections.
