AOA, sports associations felicitate Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: Assam Olympic Association felicitated Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal in a function held in a city hotel here today. It was the maiden visit for Sonowal after he was inducted in Modi's cabinet.

Several Ministers from the Union and State Government along with two legends in Indian sports Bhogeswar Baruah and Monalisa Barua Mehta were present in the function.

Addressing the gathering Bhogeswar Baruah said, "Sonowal took the initiative to make Guwahati as the sports capital of India. Hope we will reach that goal very soon."

Former paddler Monalisa Barua also spoke a few words. She said, "Lovlina Borgohain recently brought a medal from the Olympics and it indicates that the sports scenario in Assam has started to change towards a positive direction. I hope Assam will soon become a very important sports hub in the country."

Sonowal, who is also the president of the Assam Olympic Association, was felicitated in the function with gamocha, japi and citation. Several State and District level Sports Associations also took this opportunity to felicitate the minister in the same function.

Later addressing the gathering Sonowal said, "Sports plays a vital role to develop talent. Parents must encourage their children to associate with sports."

Among other presents in today's function included Rameswar Teli, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, MP and Vice President of Indian Olympic Association Bhubaneswar Kalita, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Bimal Borah, Information and Public Relation Minister Pijush Hazarika, Bhabesh Kalita, MLA and president of Assam BJP, the secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar and others.
