Spanish mountaineer Fernando Sanchez Grassa dies from exhaustion in Himalayas

Kathmandu: Spanish mountaineer Fernando Sanchez Grassa has died from fatigue in the Nepalese Himalayas, it was reported on Sunday. The 44-year-old climber died on Friday night while descending from Mount Himlung (7,126m). Rescue teams brought one of his companions to safety on Sunday after he was trapped on the peak with hypothermia, Efe news reported. The mountaineer was taken to a hospital in Kathmandu along with his twin brother, who had previously made the descent and raised the alarm. Bad weather conditions hit the area on Friday, preventing any earlier rescue mission.

Grassa's body has not yet been recovered.

Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, the director of Imagine Nepal, the agency which coordinated the expedition, said that Grassa died in the vicinity of Camp III due to exhaustion. IANS
