Indian legendary athlete Anju Bobby George is awarded with the award of 'Woman of the Year' by World Athletics on Wednesday 1 December for her dedication and efforts in the advancement of sports in India as well as inspiring women across the country to make leadership positions in sports.

She has been crowned with Women of the Year for guiding the young school girls for their future leadership in the world of sports and for always being the constant support regarding gender equality. Being the Senior Vice President of the Indian Athletics Federation, George has always raised her voice against gender inequality prevailing in the country and worked hard to bring equality especially in sports.

Her contribution to the development of sports along with its awareness among women made her a worthy recipient for this Woman of the Year award of 2021. Miss George is a retired Indian athlete and a former international long jump champion who is known worldwide for her performance and achievements in sports.

George has made history in world athlete after winning the bronze medal in the long jump in the World Championship 2003 which was held in Paris. With this success of her in 2003, she became the first-ever athlete from India to win a medal in a World Championships in Athletics jumping 6.70 metres.

Anju Bobby George, 44, was born on 19 April 1977 in Cheeranchira village of Kottayam in Kerala, joined athletics on the advice of her father, and got trained in Koruthode School. George completed her schooling at CKM Koruthode School and did graduation from Vimala College.

In 1991–92, George first recognized her talent when she won the 100 m hurdles and relay with 2nd position in the long jump and high jump, and then in the national schools' games, she won third place in 100 m hurdles and 4 × 100 m relay.

Though George is a retired athlete her involvement in the sports is still active. In the year 2016, she opened a training academy to train young girls of the country and her academy has already been successful in producing a world U20 medalist. For her huge contribution in sports being an athlete, George was honored with various reputed awards such as the Padma Shri in 2004, Arjuna Award in the year 2002 and Khel Ratna in 2003.
