AASU, ethnic groups launch satyagraha against Bill

LAKHIMPUR, June 8: Leaders of 28 ethnic organizations, including the All Assam Students’ union (AASU), opposing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 on Friday carried out a gana satyagraha here and vowed to jointly fight against it. The Bishal Gana Satyagraha programme was organized by the Lakhimpur district unit of the students’ organization at the playground of North Lakhimpur Government Boys’ HS School against the Bill decried as unconstitutional throughout the indigenous spectrum of the State with justifiable reasons.

The activists of the organizations shouting various anti-government slogans and demanding the immediate scrapping of the controversial Bill took out a procession across the North Lakhimpur town. Finally, they met the deputy commissioner of Lakhimpur and submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister to scrap the Bill, prepare an NRC free of foreigners, provide constitutional safeguard to each and every indigenous group of Assam by implementing the Assam Accord, and to seal the Assam-Bangladesh border.

The protest meeting began with the speech of AASU district president Pulak Borah. Speaking on the occasion, AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said: “The Centre must scrap the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The people of Assam will never allow the powers that be to carry it forward.”

Gogoi came down heavily on both the Union and the State governments over the issue and accused both of sponsoring communal politics in a secular country.

“Both of the governments have planned to make the updated NRC in Assam meaningless to favour the Hindu foreigners and thereby dishonour the historic Assam Accord. The Accord was the outcome of the supreme sacrifices made by 855 martyrs of the anti-foreigners movement. We will never allow the BJP to be successful in this regard,” the student leader warned, adding: “We will also be ever vigilant so that the age-old communal harmony among the indigenous communities of Assam is not endangered. Now we are fighting the last battle of the Saraighat to protect our nationality and our motherland.”
