All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Burns Bill ‘Copies’ in New Delhi

NEW DELHI: Opposing Centre’s initiative to pass the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the ongoing session of the Parliament, members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) burnt symbolic copies of the Bill in front of Assam House here on Wednesday. The AASU, AJYCP and a few other organizations also staged a human chain in the national capital in protest against CAB.

On Wednesday morning, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved ‘CAB-2019’ making way for introduction of the Bill in the Parliament.

“We will never accept CAB. This Bill is against the basic principles of the Assam Accord,” said AASU advisor Samujal Bhattacharya.

The students’ organization has called an urgent executive meeting in Guwahati on Thursday. “We will chalk out our next course of action against the Bill at the meeting tomorrow,” said a senior AASU leader.

Late on Tuesday night, Home Minister Amit Shah had detailed discussions with AASU leaders in an effort to garner the support of the students’ body in favour of the Bill.

“We have clearly told the Union Home Minister that Assam will not accept CAB at any cost. We have lost our people in our fight against illegal foreigners during the late 70s. How can we accept a Bill which gives Constitutional safeguards to illegal Hindu Bangladeshis?” posed Samujjal.
