GUWAHATI: The Assam Legislative Assembly has recommended the names of five State legislators for the Central Commission on the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in the State. The five recommended MLAs are Ramendra Narayan Kalita (AGP, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha (Congress), Hafiz Bashir Ahmed (AIUDF), Rabiram Narzary (BPF), and Mrinal Kumar Saikia (BJP). Following the approval of Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami, the list was sent to the Commission by the Assembly Secretariat. Besides, five MPs from the State would be also members of the Commission. These MPSA will be nominated by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

Delimitation is the process of fixing limits or boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country or a province with a legislative body.

On March 6, 2020, the Central Government had constituted the Commission for the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Jammu & Kashmir. In a notification, the Ministry of Law and Justice said that Justice (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Commission for a one-year period. While, the Commission will delimit the constituencies of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland in accordance with the provisions of the Delimitation Act, 2002; those in Jammu & Kashmir will be done in accordance with the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, the notification said.
