Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Worried over Ruckus in Parliament

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami today expressed his unhappiness at the ruckus created in the Parliament over the NRC issue. Goswami said that the NRC discussions on the floors of the Parliament (both Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha) have been focusing on issues that are not at all linked with the document.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the mixed opinions and the war of words, the Assembly Speaker said, “The opposite picture of what has not been happening in Assam is being sought to be highlighted. I’m not at all happy. The NRC work is being carried out under the directive of the Supreme Court, and it is only after the publication of the final NRC that the actual number of ineligible citizens in Assam would be determined,” Goswami pointed out. Only one MP from Assam presented the true picture and facts of NRC in Parliament, Goswami added.

The final draft of the NRC has left over 40 lakh people in Assam in a state of shock and disbelief as their names were left out of the final draft.

It may be mentioned that out of the 3.29 Crore people over 40 lakh people have been left out even though the NRC officials have officially clarified that those whose names have not been included will not be declared as foreigners.

The officials further clarified that no punitive action will be taken against them. Registrar General of India, Shailesh stated before the Media on Monday that, “Whoever does not have name will get the opportunity to file claim/ objections under adequate time. Those left out will have the option to file the online application in NRC website or visit an NRC Seva Kendra.”

It has also been declared today that December 2018 has been fixed for the release of the final NRC.
