Assam Police to conduct surveys at rented houses in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The Assam Police will conduct a survey at rented houses under different police stations in the city to extract detailed information about tenants staying there.

The survey will be jointly conducted by the police and members of Nagarik Samities. Initially, the survey will cover rented houses under Satgaon, Hatigaon, Gorchuk, and Geetanagar police stations. The decision towards this end was taken during a meeting between the Assam Police and Nagarik Samities of different localities held at the District Library Auditorium here on Tuesday.

Soon after the meeting, the Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta told reporters that details of tenants will be recorded in a particular format during the ‘aggressive’ survey. He said members of the Nagarik Samities will accompany the police officials so that citizens do not mind or become worried during the survey.

The Tuesday’s meeting was organized with an aim to improve the police-public relationship and identify various problems on both sides. The problems such pretty crimes in different localities, shortage of manpower in police stations and traffic congestion got focused in the meeting.

On the issue of traffic congestion the DGP sought public cooperation. He said public cooperation could play a role in easing traffic congestion.

The development has, however, not convinced many citizens. They said even though such initiatives were taken in the past, the public did not see the desired results due to lack of consistency in execution.

“As per rules, every police station must collect information about tenants staying in different localities for the sake of law and order. The police must create awareness among landlords and citizens about the importance of such information. I am afraid whether the new proposed initiatives will yield positive results,” a senior citizen said.
