GUWAHATI, May 31: Nagaon has stolen the show in Higher Secondary final examination, 2018 with students from the central Assam district topping all the three merit lists in Arts, Commerce and Science. Closely following Nagaon in the merit list is Barpeta district that has made its presence largely felt in all the three merit lists. Guwahati has fared badly in the examination with only three ranks in its share – two in Commerce stream and one in Science stream. It has drawn blank in Arts stream.

The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) declared HS final examination results of the three streams, besides vocational stream, on Thursday. What is glaringly visible in the results announced is that private educational institutions have fared well against government institutions when it comes to making it to the merit lists. As many as 2,50,713 candidates took the examinations in all the four streams, and 193,277 of them have come out successful.

While Arts has registered a pass percentage of 74.68 against 73.16 last year, Commerce has registered a pass percentage of 84.64 against 82.72 last year. Science has, however, registered a slight fall in its pass percentage – with 85.74 per cent coming out successful against 86.24 per cent last year. The pass percentage in vocational stream is 87.79 against 81.63 last year.

In the Arts stream, 1,45,281 of the 1,94,533 candidates who took the examination have come out successful. While 81,698 of the 1,05,954 girl students who took the HS Arts examination have come out successful, the pass percentage being 77.10, as many as 63,583 of the 88,579 boys who took the examination have come out successful, the pass percentage being 71.78. Among the successful candidates, 19,470 have secured first division, 45,751 secured the second division and 80,060 secured third division. While Nagaon district has bagged four of the first ten positions in the merit list, Barpeta district has bagged three, Jorhat has bagged two, and Nalbari, Golaghat, Biswanath Chariali and Lakhimpur have got one each.

When it comes to pass percentage in Arts, Dhemaji district is on the top with 90.77 per cent success rate, followed by Darrang with 85.98 per cent and Lakhimpur with 85.42 per cent. Karbi Anglong district has the least success rate in Arts with 56.39 per cent.

In the Commerce stream, 15,038 of the 17,767 candidates who took the examination have come out successful – 3,526 in first division, 4,950 in second division and 6,562 in third division. While 10,996 of the 13,217 male candidates who took the examination have come out successful registering a pass percentage of 83.19, as many as 4,042 of the 4,550 female candidates who took the examination have come out successful registering a pass percentage of 88.8. While Nagaon district has occupied four ranks in the merit list, Dibrugarh district has got three ranks and the Barak Valley districts have got three ranks. In terms of pass percentage, Chirang district has topped the chart with 94.74, followed by Nalbari with 94.07 and Dhemaji with 93.47. Kokrajhar district has the lowest pass percentage with 62.8.

In the Science stream, 32,045 of the 37,373 candidates who took the examination have come out successful with 15,728 securing first division, 13,825 securing second division and 2,492 securing third division. While as many as 21,895 of the 25,857 male candidates who took the examination have passed the examination registering a pass percentage of 84.56, a total of 10,150 of the 11,516 female candidates who took the examination have passed it registering a pass percentage of 88.13. While four ranks in the merit list have gone to Barpeta, three, including the top rank, has gone to Nagaon. In terms of pass percentage, Hailakandi has topped the list 91.43, followed by Darrang with 91.24 and Nalbari with 90.99. Kokrajhar district has the lowest pass percentage of 58.84.

In the vocational stream, 913 of the 1,040 candidates taking the examination have passed it – 267 in first division, 594 in second division and 52 in third division.
