Cancer Hospital iugurated in GMCH

Rs 1,000 crore has been earmarked for the AIIMS to be set up near Guwahati: JP dda

GUWAHATI, Feb 17: Giving a huge boost to the health sector in Assam, a state-of-the-art Cancer Hospital was iugurated by Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal and Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP dda, who also electronically unveiled AMRIT pharmacies in five medical colleges of the State at a function held in the GMCH Auditorium in the city on Friday. 

dda said the Cancer Hospital would be accorded the status of a State Cancer Institute and the Central government would provide Rs 120 crore to it, which would be in addition to Rs 90 crore already earmarked for the institute.

Saying that setting up of the AIIMS in the city would be a huge fillip to the healthcare scerio of the State as well as the region, dda said Rs 1,000 crore has already been earmarked for the AIIMS.

dda also announced that free dialysis facility would be provided in all district hospitals of the State to below poverty line (BPL) families and all existing medical colleges in the State would be upgraded to super specialty hospitals.

Saying that economically weaker cancer patients can now avail of quality treatment within the State, Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal said the newly constructed Cancer Hospital in Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) would bring a ray of hope to people suffering from the deadly disease.

Sonowal said three new medical colleges to be built at Dhubri, gaon and Lakhimpur with a total cost of Rs 570 crore would help produce large number of doctors in the coming years.

Stating that this year’s State budget has made increased fund allocation to the Health sector, the Chief Minister said community ownership is a must if the government health institutions have to perform to their potential.

Urging the people to keep a close watch on the works of government hospitals, Sonowal said public participation is of paramount importance to make service delivery in government health institutions fully accountable.

State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other top officials of the Health department were also present on the occasion.
