Centre extends tenure for a month of high-level committee on implementation of Clause 6

GUWAHATI: The Centre has extended the tenure of the high-level committee on the implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord for a month.

The term of the committee reconstituted by the Union Home Ministry (MHA) in July 15, 2019, was scheduled to expire on January 15. But Union Home Minister Amit Shah in his recent meeting with the high-level committee’s members in New Delhi had extended the term till February 15. The decision was taken after the committee sought some time to complete and submits its report to the Centre. Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma, former judge of Gauhati High Court and chairman of the committee and three other members were present in the meeting with Shah. The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leaders Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Dipanko Kumar Nath are also the members of the committee.

The committee has 14 members from different walks of life.

Clause 6 of the historic Assam Accord states: “Constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards, as may be appropriate, shall be provided to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people”.
