CM says ‘no leniency’ for culprits

16 arrested for lynching 2 youths; CM gets into a huddle with CS & DGP

GUWAHATI, June 10: Even as 16 people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of two youths, mistaking them as child lifters, in Karbi Anglong district on Friday, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal got into a huddle with Chief Secretary TY Das and DGP Kuladhar Saikia on Sunday and asked them to be vigilant and not to be lenient.

ADGP (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwala said the police are on the lookout for more people involved in the incident. He said the situation in Dokmoka, where the killings took place, is under control.

In some villages around Dokmoka, fake posts went viral on social media about xopadhara (child lifters) in the area. Preliminary investigation says that the people in the area suspected the two youths as child lifters and attacked them.

Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath were brutally killed by a mob near Kathilangso waterfall.

Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing situation, the Chief Minister held a high-level meeting at his official residence here on Sunday in the presence of Chief Secretary TY Das and DGP Kuladhar Saikia.

The meeting took stock of the prevailing situation, besides holding a threadbare discussion on all aspects of law and order in the State. Sonowal asked the DGP to ensure that the police force maintains constant vigilance on all activities and put spanner on any canards likely to vitiate public order and peace in the State. Referring to the killing of two young artistes, he maintained that the culprits should be brought to book and no leniency should be exhibited in dealing with the incident.

Meanwhile, after his meeting with the Chief Minister, the DGP, at a press meet in the presence of the Chief Secretary, said: “With the help of the social media 16 people – one for spreading rumour and 15 others for being directly involved in the lynching the two – have been arrested. We’re here not to spare anyone guilty in the killing. We appeal to the people of the State not to rely on rumours. Anyone getting information on rumours or rumour mongers should inform the police of them immediately. Efforts are on to bring the social media under control. We’re keeping a close watch on the social media through two ways. ADGP Harmit Singh has been given the responsibility of preventing crime-related messages from spreading through the social media.” The police released some telephone numbers for people to contact them.

Meanwhile, the police had a harrowing time in controlling protesters at Chandmari in Guwahati on Sunday. When the situation was about to go out of control, the police resorted to lathi-charge.

The 16 people arrested by the police in connection with the killing are Biju Basumatary, Biswaram Swargiary, Dhonda Mech, Dhono Mech, Dipjyoti Basumatary, Horukon Swargiary, Pangtheng Basumatary, Ram Swargiary, Umesh Khakhlary, Babu Rongpi, Anos Timung, Sanjay Terang, Bodyasing Rongpi, Anand Rongpi, Raju Bey and Bhupendra Terang.
