Dispur intensified Pre-Emptive battle against coronavirus

GUWAHATI: Dispur has intensified its pre-emptive battle against the novel coronavirus with Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asking the deputy commissioners to ban any kind of gatherings at public places. The DCs have also been asked to convince the people to minimize mass gatherings at social and religious events like marriages, namaz and puja.

Sarma while addressing the DCs of all districts through video conferencing on Tuesday, said even though Assam has not recorded a single positive case of coronavirus, the State cannot take any risk and become complacent. He said a large number of people working outside Assam have returned to their homes and they could be potential carrier of the fatal virus.

“This is the most crucial phase for the State. We have to closely watch the health condition of those worked outside and now staying in their homes in the State. Even if these are infected they might in incubation period. Symptoms in these people will manifest only after 10 to 14 days. So, it is time to maximum pre-caution and social isolation or separation is the best option to avoid any possibility of contacting with the virus,” Sarma told the DCs.

Sarma said the districts administration have to convince the people to minimize mass gatherings at social and religious events. He advised the DCs to allow solemnizing marriages without receptions and convince the religious leaders to minimize mass gatherings at namghars, mosques, churches and temples. There will be no adda and window shopping at malls.

From Wednesday, the DCs will visit all civil hospitals to ensure all arrangements to treat coronavirus infected patients. Sarma asked the DCs to arrange quarantine facility at hotels and guest houses. Any suspected infected person must be quarantined for at least 14 days.

As regards to safety measures for train passengers, Sarma said there will be single exit points at all stoppages of Rajdhani Express in Assam so that not a single passenger is left out from medical screening.

Medical screening at land entry points along Assam-Bangladesh border and Assam-Bhutan border will be intensified.

Sarma said the State Chief Secretary will issue a list of dos and don’ts to prevent spreading coronavirus on Wednesday which will have to be followed strictly by all authorities concerned. The government will also come out with a separate instructions as how to reduce mass gatherings in four BTAD districts in view of the ensuing BTC elections.
