Dispur to appoint management graduates to manage administration in public hospitals

GUWAHATI: Dispur is planning to appoint management graduates in government hospitals to unburden doctors from non-medical chores and inject a dose of administrative professionalism in health care services.

A source in the Dispur Health department said running of hospitals requires a great sense of responsibility, team spirit, decision-making capacity, communication and negotiating skills. The government has found that such jobs can be executed smoothly and professionally by management graduates.

Management graduates could play a crucial role in smooth running of the hospitals, especially in the time of emergencies.

“Apart from serving patients, doctors also have to take care of administrative affairs which become an additional burden. At a time when people’s expectation from the government hospitals is rising, the government feels that the management and administrative functioning of the hospitals should be exclusively looked after by non-medical professional personnel,” the source said.

Most of the leading hospitals in the country are recruiting well-trained managers who have professional skills in general management and healthcare delivery systems.

He said health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been putting emphasis on recruiting young people with good managerial skills to effectively deal with the daily functioning of the hospitals.

Candidates who have completed the MBA courses in hospital and healthcare management or a Master’s degree in hospital or health administration could be appointed at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, the Assam Medical College and Hospital and Silchar Medical College and Hospital at the initial stage.

The hospital management societies will recruit the deserving candidates for such posts and pay the salaries without putting additional burden on the government exchequer.

“Candidates with training in management, accounting and business communication along with specialised knowledge in the working of a hospital, marketing its services and logistics management will be given preference. The management graduates will also have a basic knowledge of healthcare and nutrition, prevention of communicable diseases, community health and other medical personnel related aspects,” thje source said.

A senior doctor at GMCH said such a step was long awaited and would lessen the burden on senior doctors who were often bogged down with patient care and other hospital related administrative jobs.

“For example, when a doctor serves patients at a hospital, he will want everything, including supply of medicines and bed strength, to be in order to provide the best of treatment. Such equations will be possible when the management of the hospital is handled by skilled persons,” the doctor said.
