Firing by ULFA, NSCN rebels

JOYSAGAR/SIVASAGAR, April 24: A group of suspected ULFA (I) and NSCN militants created tension at Sapekhati Tiniali here on Monday evening. Sources said that a group of militants armed with sophisticated arms suddenly arrived in the busy Sapekhati Tiniali market area on Monday evening and opened indiscriminate firing in the air to frighten local people. The incident created a panic situation and people who were present there received injuries while trying to run for shelter.

Sources revealed that the militants had served many extortion notes to local businessmen of the area but the business community refused to meet the the militants’ demand. The militants arrived there and tried to frighten the people. During the firing incident, many bullets were targeted at a petrol pump near the Tiniali, leaving three of its employees injured. Another militant group also fired at the office building of Kanu Tea Estate in the Sapekhati area the same evening to terrorize the workers and the management of the tea company, sources said.

After the incidents, the Charaideo district administration announced a high alert in the area and the Indian Army, CRPF and Sapekhati Police reached the spot and started an operation to nab the militants. Meanwhile, the Charaideo district administration clamped Section 144 CrPC along the Assam-Nagaland and Assam-Arunachal border areas.
