GUWAHATI: The Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) will be able to resume its services for general patients from May 15.

Making this announcement, Health & Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said after the PG student of Medicine department of GMCH Dr Lithikesh was found COVID-19 positive, the Health department had collected 2000 swab samples of patients, doctors, nurses and other staffs of the hospital for testing. He added that of the 2000 samples, only two have been found positive including those of dentist Dr Dipa Deka and patient Amarjyoti Deka.

"Under such circumstances, the GMCH will be to resume its services from May 15," Sarma said, adding that the patient Deka has no travel history and his 21 family members have been quarantined.

On other hand, Mangru Sahani of Fancy Bazar who was found COVID positive on Tuesday, hails from Uttar Pradesh and has been staying in the city. His contact tracing has identified 29 persons. Sarma said that Sahani must have been infected by the virus during his work at a potato godown at Changsari. The godown has now been declared as a containment zone.

According to Sarma, the State has so far recorded 63 COVID-19 positive cases, and two patients died. Altogether 22 patients are currently undergoing treatment.
