Gogoi welcomes regularization of entry and stay of minorities

By Our Staff Reporter
Guwahati, Sept 9: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today welcomed the Centre's decision to regularize entry and stay of people of religious minority from Pakistan and Bangladesh, who have been forced to flee to India due to persecution in their respective countries.  "It is a not a new decision. We have been all along asking for allowing these persecuted people to stay in India on humanitarian grounds," Gogoi told a press conference here. Gogoi maintained that the Congress government in the State had spoken out in favour of all communities who have faced persecution but the BJP had earlier been seeking assistance only for Bengali Hindus. On whether this new decision will impact the Assam Accord, Gogoi pointed that the Accord dealt with citizenship issue and this latest Central government notification only allows these communities to stay in India.
