Hospitals For Precision, To Adopt Electronic Mortality Record (e-Mor) System

GUWAHATI: Hospitals in Assam will be using Electronic Mortality Record (e-Mor) system to accurately record the causes of death.

The development according to a senior doctor at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will eventually result in generating quality statistical data on mortality in the State.

The B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), in association with National Informatics and Research (NCDIR), Bangalore, under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has already conducted a workshop on e-Mor system among doctors of various hospitals of the north-eastern States. Experts from the NCDIR explained the usage of the software for e-Mor at the workshop.

An oncologist at BBCI said even though the incidence of cancer in Assam is very high compared to other parts of the country, information on cancer mortality is not enough due to improper medical certification of death.

“A person diagnosed with cancer earlier may die of different causes but the doctor will certify the cause of death as cancer. This results in improper data. The e-Mor system will eliminate these problems while aiding research activities,” the doctor said.

Around 40,000 new cases of cancer are detected in the Northeast every year, out of which 31,000 are from Assam alone. Kamrup district has the fourth highest incidence of cancer among men and third highest for women in the country.

Besides Assam’s hospitals, Sikkim’s STNM Hospital, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, Bakin Pertin General Hospital of Pasighat, Civil Hospital of Aizawl, Naga Hospital Authority of Kohima and Tomo Riba State hospital in Naharlagun have also planned to introduce the e-Mor system.
