India re-write Games record

GUWAHATI, Feb 11: India’s golden run continued at the 12th South Asian Games today as the hosts re-wrote two records – winning the highest number of gold medals and the highest overall medals tally in a single edition of the Games. At the end of the seventh-day of the competition, India bagged 140 golds, 78 silvers and 20 bronzes to take their tally to 238. In the 2006 South Asian Games held at Colombo, India had won 118 gold medals with an overall tally of 214. Indian athletes have thus etched Guwahati’s me in the history book, surpassing previous records.

The hosts today opened their account with a gold at the Chachal tennis complex where the pair of Prarth Thombre and Sharmadaa Balu defeated their teammates Rishika Sunkara and tasha Palha via tie-breaker (10-4) after the match was locked one set all at 7-5, 2-6. The men’s singles fil was also an all-India affair where R Ramathan defeated S Myneni in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
