IOC official shoots down monkey

Guwahati, May 4: A senior officer of Indian Oil Corporation's Guwahati Refinery shot dead a monkey at the premises of his official residence on Wednesday morning, raising the hackles of animal rights groups. The dead monkey was spotted along the boundary wall of quarter number 3100 of Noonmati's Sector III at around 7 am in the morning. The residence belongs to A Jamir, an electrical engineer employed in the refinery. Forest officials, on being informed, retrieved the carcass and sent it for post mortem.

It is suspected that the animal was shot dead with an air gun. Forest ranger Homen Pegu has lodged an FIR at Noonmati police station over the incident.

Police visited Jamir's official residence twice, but on both occasions, it was found locked.

Troops of monkeys continue to run amok at many areas of the capital city. Residents in some localities are struggling to cope with the mece, with the simians invading houses, raiding kitchens, stching food and generally harassing people.
