Man held for inciting Pengeree violence

DIGBOI, April 16: One person identified as Samar Das (52), son of Pur Chandra Das, resident of Dwarmara Village Line no. 10 under Pengeree police station in Tinsikia district was arrested on Saturday morning for his alleged involvement in the April 11 violence near Pengeree police station during which 12 agitators died and 20 were injured.

According to police sources, based on individual evidence as well as video clippings and convincing footage, Das, who is a worker in Dwarmara TE, was arrested on grounds of illegal trespass and designing the said riots “committed in prosecution of common object causing voluntarily grievous injuries and damage to property”.  

According to sources, the police have been leaving no stone unturned to unearth the cause of the riot and explore all possible aspects to ascertain the exact ture of the crime, and the party and intention involved in committing the heinous crime. Interrogation of the accused is on and more arrests are expected.

Twelve people were killed and 20 others injured at Pengeree on April 11 after a mob went on rampage at Pengeree police station, demanding handover of persons arrested on twin murder charges.

To control the mob, the police resorted to baton charge and fired in the air, the sources said. A bullet hit an overhead high-tension electric wire causing it to fall on the mob. Ten people died on the spot, two died later while 20 others were injured.
