Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: The Chairman of the High-level Committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, Justice (retired) Biplab Kumar Sarma has said that the Committee has been trying its best to recommend as much as possible under Clause 6 of the Accord within the perimeter of the Constitution of India.

The 14-member high-level committee is at its last phase. There have been marathon meetings at the Administrative Staff College at Khanapara here since Monday so as to meet its extended deadline – February 15. Such a meeting on Tuesday was also attended by Union Home Joint Secretary (Northeast) Satyendra Garg.

Talking to the media after the meeting on Tuesday Justice (retired) Biplab Kumar Sarma said that the committee is trying its best to send maximum recommendations under Clause 6 of the Assam Accord within the parameters of the Constitution of India and some judgments delivered by the Supreme Court of India. “We’re doing it wholeheartedly so as to ensure constitutional safeguards to the Assamese. We have discussed the matter with the government and other stakeholders of the State. We’re trying to submit the report before February 15. We hope the government will certainly consider our recommendations,” Justice (retired) Sarma said.

One of the members of the high-level committee and adviser-in-chief of the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “We’ve shouldered the responsibility of all immigrants, both Hindus and Muslims, entering Assam from 1951-1971. That’s the reason why the Assam Accord included Clause 6. This is our due. We want the implementation of each and every clause of the Assam Accord in specific time-frames. The solution to the problem of foreigners lies in the Assam Accord.”
